This full bathroom was in a split level home built in the 1960s. The level the bathroom was on had no bedrooms. None. The home has three other bathrooms that service five bedrooms so they really didn’t need another bathroom. What they did need was a better laundry room. Their tiny washer and dryer were shoved in a closet in the basement so I suggested instead of fixing the leaky shower (which required a full shower remodel), turn the bathroom into its original intent, a powder bath with a laundry room.
This was the bathroom before we began.
This bathroom was originally the laundry room but had been turned into a bathroom with a weird open space.
We moved the laundry room from a closet in the basement back up to this room. We got rid of the really low cabinets and installed new cabinetry.
We also created a shelf to hide the dryer vent that had to go out the house above the laundry.
There was no need for this shower. It was leaky and couldn’t be used until totally redone. We decided it was not worth the money to redo the shower.
Instead we made it a little laundry folding and storage nook. It was more cost effect to keep the plumbing in the existing wall but we took away what was not needed to make the room feel bigger.
Quadrostyle to the rescue….
This laundry room remodel was not the only thing that had to happen in this home. My homeowners (because of undisclosed problems) purchased a home with some serious water issues. They had to completely repave their pool and do extensive basement work because water was flooding their basement. They wanted the laundry room tile to be updated but only had it in the budget to functionally update the space. Removing the tile mean having to redo the floor (there would be a gap), removing the toilet, new drywall or new tile… not to mention getting a plumber to come and remove everything and set it back.
I sent this picture to Quadrostyle to see if they would want to help make this laundry room something my homeowners would want their guests to see.
I am not a huge blogger or famous interior designer but after hearing my homeowner’s story, Quadrostyle wanted the help and provided all the Vinyl tile needed to transform this bathroom.
My homeowners are lovers of all things Mid Century. I thought the Astra Tile in Black would bring pattern to this boring room, go with their renovation choices and make a pretty blah room fun. Honestly they have so many tiles to choose from it was hard to pick. The Astra tile, to me, was the most Mid-Century choice.
What is Quadrostyle?
Quadrostyle is a company that makes Vinyl Tile Stickers. The best part? They are removable. They have all sorts of products ranging from wall stickers, wall paper, floor stickers, and stair risers. Renters can transform their ugly bathroom or kitchen backsplash tile, or homeowners can transform tile without the cost and inconvenience of renovation.
We simply ordered the product with help from Quadrostyle customer service and the bathroom/laundry room now looks like this! No Demo…No Mess.
You can see the tile wrapped around the entire room.
You will see in our video and instructions below Quadrostyle recommended we use vinyl tile wallpaper for our project. Quadrostyle has many different options for standard tile and custom tile sizes including vinyl wall paper rolls. Check out below why they suggested wall paper for our project below.
Here is how we installed the Vinyl Tile Wall Paper
I created a little video that gives all the details! Keep reading for my written instructions.
Need written instuctions? Here you go
Step 1
Contact Quadrostyle for advice on what product to buy. I sent them this picture with the sizes of our tile. We had a custom sized tile installed in a staggered pattern. We knew the tile we wanted and they helped me figure out how to make it happen. Quadrostyle advised us to choose the Vinyl Wall Paper over a custom sized tile stickr. Here is why:
- The staggered tile pattern would not allow the star pattern to line up if we purchased tiles sized to stick directly over the tile.
- Our grout lines were not deep so the wallpaper would not indent at the grout lines.
- The pattern would repeat and be sized correctly for the room.
Step 2
I knew my homeowners hated this tile so much that I painted the porous tile border black. This was a very permanent move, but I knew the next step in this bathroom to be to rip it all out so I felt good about it.
Step 3
Gather all your materials. Here is what you need:
- Multipurpose Cleaner and a Rag
- Quadrostyle Install Instructions
- Level or a Chalk Line. We used our laser level.
- Soft rag for install. I used a microfiber rag.
- Wall Paper Smoother for making straight cuts on the edges. I did not use this to smooth the Vinyl Wall Paper.
- Utility Knife with a sharp blade.
- Extra sharp blades
- Scissors for cutting panels when needed.
- Vinyl Wall Paper Roll
- Vinyl Tile Stickers for the base tile
Step 4
Before installing your tile sticker/wallpaper clean the tile with multipurpose cleaner.
Step 5
I have never met a level wall, especially at the ceiling or where the corners of walls meet. You need to mark your horizontal level line and your vertical plumb line. This is crucial for the tile pattern lining up with wall paper and ease of install.
We used a laser level that provides both lines at the same time. You set the laser on a tripod and level it up. What is nice is the level line goes around the room and you never have to move it unless you need a new plumb line.
Step 6
Plan Ahead and grab a friend. You will need an extra set of hands.
Step 7
Line up the end of your panel with your plumb line and level line.
Take about 4 inches of backing off the end of your panel and line it up with your level line and your plumb line.
Slowly take the backing off the wall paper and smooth with a soft rag. Check to see if you are level and reposition if you are not.
Note: Because of how our tile was installed, Quadrostyle instructed us to install our tile horizontally. The same process goes for installing the wall paper vertically you just have gravity to help you keep it straight. You stil need two people!
Step 8
Once one panel is on line up the second panel along the grout line and repeat steps 4-7.
Step 9
Round the corner and then use your straight edge and utility knife to cut the tile at the corner.
Step 10
Finish one wall before moving onto the next.
Step 11
Measure your panel when you need to make cuts.
Make the cuts with scissors
We used a full wall paper panel for the top row and had to cut a panel a little over half for the bottom row. Leave a little excess so you can make a cut at your trim to fit perfectly.
Step 12
Start a new plumb and level line with a new wall.
Step 13
Overlap about 1/2″ with the new panel at the corners.
Step 14
Cut excess with a sharp utility knife and straight edge.
Step 15
Install the vinyl tile stickers over the base trim.
Our base tile was a standard 4X4 size so Quadrostyle sent stickers to cover the base tile. You simply remove the backing and install directly over the tile.
Most base tile tapers into the wall tile. Our tile was an inch thick sitting more like wall trim. The tile sticker did not cover the top of the tile so we matched the paint and painted it black.
It worked like a charm because it looks like solid black trim and much easier than painting the tile.
I love how the space turned out.
Most Importantly my homeowner loves her new laundry room!
Thoughts on Quadrostyle Product
I would definitely use it again. The product is quality and once you take time to understand the instuctions…. not hard to install. The stickers were easier to install than the wall paper but both are totally doable.
In a couple of months I will do an update post to let you know how its holding up.
Thanks Quadrostyle for helping make this Laundry room exactly what my homeowner wanted!
