My favorite time of year is the One Room Challenge event. I always get so much inspiration from all the featured designers, and this year I decided to give in be a guest participant for the ORC. I am hoping the 6 week deadline will kick myself into gear to finish out my master bedroom. I also can’t wait to follow the featured designers and other guest participants.
Let’s get down to it. Here is the plan for my master bedroom 6 week makeover. All the details of everything in this mood board is sourced at the bottom. In 6 weeks I hope to execute this plan affordably and stylishly. But before we get to all the details lets start from the beginning…
Most of you who follow, know that my husband and I have been renovating our 100 year old home. We renovate homes for a living and sometimes the last thing we want to do with our free time is renovate ours. This might explain why we have done nothing to finish out our master bedroom in four years. The above photo is the master bedroom in it’s original form. The walls, floors, electrical, and everything inside the walls did get updated 4 years ago. I know you are wondering why we didn’t keep the 50 year old shag carpet, I know, but we decided to get rid of it… along with the rake that came with it (literally).
Sadly, this is how this room has stayed since we have finished renovating the upstairs. Our son’s room, the guest bedroom, and other renovations were more important. We sold our bed when we moved and have slept on a metal bed frame ever since. What…. are we in college? If you looked in our bedroom you might think so. This is not me… I promise. Let’s talk about what is really me.
Here are the spaces that inspire me.
I love the simple bedding with a pop of floral vintage pillow case. I love adding vintage items into my spaces. Vintage textiles are such a fun and interesting addition. I also liked how the furniture is substantial but not heavy because its all on legs. it makes the room feel bigger. I also love the large art instead of a gallery wall.
I do love a good stripe but what really stood out was the green nightstand. I loved this particular color of green. It feels neutral to me. It could provide color but go with anything. This picture is in Domino’s first book and I have had a bookmark there for the longest time.
I also love, love, love this bedroom by Sarah Sherman Samuel. I love the light green bed with the vintage rug. This is actually a smaller bedroom and it feels colorful and big.
I also loved how the green bed and light wall color paired well with the midcentury walnut colored dresser. The midcentury dresser was a similar walnut color (different style) one to the one I have in my room. While I love white walls, I am wanting go a different direction in my upstairs bedrooms since my entire downstairs will be painted white.
I am not over the gray or the white trend. I don’t think I was ever over the tan trim… beige on beige on beige I am totally over…. but I think all the neutrals have a place in the right context. The goal is to paint the room my favorite Gray from Benjamin Moore, Gray Owl with only 50% of the formula.
I found this picture on instagram and loved the mix of black, green, and blue. I decided this color pallet would be foundation of my bedroom design. I could easily add in wood tones, leather tones, floral, and a little bit of coral in this design.
A little word about my design style. I love modern lines but I like to mix in different styles, different patterns, and different textures. I like everything to be cohesive and in specific design situations desire symmetry, but I don’t like things to match. I am very eclectic and I like spaces to look collected with a mixture of old and new.
One of my favorite things in a room is unexpected pattern or statement piece. My favorite spaces have neutral background’s but “push it” just a little somewhere. I love the unexpected pattern in the sofa. My room does not allow this much furniture but I think I am going to add unexpected pattern in the window treatments.
With these inspiration photos in mind I knew that I wanted an affordable greyish green bed. I found this bed from Anthropologie. I had found the perfect greenish gray bed. Yes…. until I saw the price. Yikes! Maybe it’s worth it but it was about $1000 more than I wanted to spend. The search began for a similar affordable piece. Stay tuned for next week…. .
I also wanted to use my walnut mid century dresser that was a Craigslist find from years ago. The above photo is not my dresser but one similar in style and color.
While I wanted a large vintage rug for the room, my husband wanted something softer on his feet. A new (soft under the feet) Persian/Kilim rug was a little pricey so I knew that I would be layering rugs. The above photo is a knotted wood rug from….. I bought a similar 9 X 12 rug on clearance from Lowes a few years ago. It is soft and it’s a perfect background for a layered rug.
So, here is the plan for the space. and I can’t wait for it to come together.
See you next week (or since I am a little behind becoming a guest participant, I will see you in a few days!) You can check out all the featured designers here and the other guest participants here.
