This week, while I wait on the big items to arrive, I have spent some time deciding what to hang on the walls of my sons room. I am excited for it to be a reflection of things he has made but also things that he loves. Choosing a few is so hard for me and for him. He loves them all. The problem is I cannot keep up with the magnitude of production in creativity from my son each week. How do I commit to putting something on the wall that will be old news next week? The good news is I have a plan for the treasures that do not make it.
Here is the strategy for his art:
- A few on the wall framed in a unique way.
- A place for the favorites that don’t make it on the wall.
- A place for those things we want to remember but don’t need to showcase (a.k.a the coloring pages from age 8)
Showcase his favorite pieces on the wall in a grown up way. I saw the above picture in Architectural Digest and I thought this is such a fun way to display a grouping of eclectic art. It almost feels like it is one large piece of art. I am headed to the mecca of blue and yellow (aka Ikea) next week and I will be grabbing some white frames to create something like this with his art.
The rest of his wonderful pieces will be showcased in an art book. I grabbed an extra large photo album….you know the kind with the peel away film… and started a collection of his pieces that can be easily seen. I have thought about scanning the art in and making an art book but let’s be honest. I never do it and the art just piles up. This works better for me to have a place for it to go immediately.
Finally, I have these white bins from Ikea to store the treasures from each year/grade. I have bought one for every grade and we place things in them when we are ready for them to be tucked away until we need a trip down memory lane. What I love about these is they stack and can easily stack in a larger bin years down the road when they need to travel with him as an adult. Excuse me while I ugly crying as I type.
Here is a little view of how I stored these items in his room before. I think I move these to a more accessible location.
I also want to mix in some fun oversize prints like the one above. I am a huge fan of Unsplash for these types of projects. There are some fun free photos out there and I am in love with this Star Wars Lego photo.
How do you store you kids art? I would love to hear it.
Come back next week we will have some updated built ins and the start of the wall paper installation.
Don’t forget to check out the featured designers posts from yesterday. Today all the guest participants posted their progress. I hope to instagram some of my favorite follows so far in both categories!
