It’s been four years since we have moved into our home. We have a long list of renovations left to do but it so nice to have a master bedroom retreat. I was going for a clean feel with lots of color, pattern, and textures. The room, like most old house rooms has large windows that make it difficult for furniture placement. My husband and I like simple. I like a little color and pattern and he likes simple. So this is a perfect set up for us. I love how it turned out. Lets get down to it.
The the piece that started it all was the bed. You, know the one I bought brand new and had upholstered.
The fireplace will one day be changed to an electric insert. The gas insert would be nice but the flue is too small. These vintage fireplace were basically very intense (and very dangerous) gas powered heaters.
This chair is a piece I have had for a long time. It was not the original intent… and still may not be. I am taking an upholstery class and have reupholstered a chair. I didn’t get it done it time so this will have to do for now. But…. I am reconsidering putting the chair somewhere else because this looks pretty cute.
The side table is a basket turned upside down on one of those cheap wood tables that most people put fabric over.
The large area rug I have had and just kept it in the space. It is a knotted wool rug from Lowes (no longer available). The curtains are a little DIY project. I made these curtains out of this duvet cover from H&M.
I used my Craigslist dresser and I love it. I don’t think I will ever buy a dresser brand new. There are so many vintage ones out there that need new homes and new life.
The frame is from Ikea, spray painted white. The photo is a free stock photo from StockSnapIO. If you subscribe (for free) they release free photos to download. These usually remain free on the website and some are for a limited time. I got an email with the above photo and I loved it. I printed it on an outdoor vinyl banner and installed in the Ikea frame used to install canvas prints (link shows frame and picture… you can buy the frame for $20). This is an inexpensive way to get great art.
Since I have two sets of sconces in my room I didn’t need lamps. I wanted these sconces to serve the function and style that a lamp can bring to a room. These sconces are from CB2 and they are one of my favorite things in the room.
Everything else used to style my dresser, besides the books, were estate sale finds. I love vintage jewelry boxes. I have another in my bathroom for makeup storage.
I love buying vases from At Home Decor. The style selection is all over the map and they are pretty affordable.
This is actually a brand new vintage look Vornado table fan. Did you know that Vornado is made right here in Wichita Kansas? Techinically Andover Ks but it is pretty much Wichita.
I hate the door situation in this room. My bedroom door collides with the closet door when they are both opening. You have to shut one door to open one door. My solution until we figure out something more permanent are curtains. It feels more part of the closet if it is mounted inside of the closet.
The curtains are these curtains from Ikea. Here is a little trick… look for table cloth’s with fringe at estate sales. I could buy one a week there are so many here. Cut off the fringe and add it to your curtain. I sewed it but you could glue it with fabric glue.
If you don’t know about Jenny’s Print Shop… you need to. The “I Like You Very Much” print is my favorite from her collection.
My husband and I got engaged at the Belvedere Castle in New York City right under that covered lookout. I found this photo on a stock photo site as well.
I love the mixture of black and brass in these extremely affordable mid century sconces.
I really love mixing all the patterns with the grayish green bed. We have loved loved loved the bed. This bed is really affordable and great quality.
I love mixing different styles with different vintage eras. I love how the school house light looks with the mid century sconces. They work together well. I am glad I decided to return the sputnik light.
I love pattern but I didn’t want wall paper. The best way to add it in was with the curtains. It has quite the impact yet is easily changeable. The black and white pattern is such a great contrast to the vibrant rug.
This little mid century lady makes me smile. Painting’s like this is the reason why I go to estate sales.
That is it! Whew! This room is totally and completely me. I love mixing in vintage with new to create a modern… yet collected look!
