It is week 4 of the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge. This week I am talking about tile. When we began the process we knew that we wanted color. We did not, however, want crazy color. We wanted more of a classic color that makes a statement. A statement that wont be a weird one in ten years. The house has classic colors… we felt green would fit nicely into the color palette of the entire home.
Last week I shared the marble floor tile. It really does have so many tones of the house.
What I also love about old houses is the character and charm of something unexpected in permanent elements. I think we have lost that sense of bravery today and I wanted to execute it in this bathroom. We had a large shower to do it.
I love the look of color blocked rooms. When it is done right, it is timeless.
I have done it many times and thought… why not color block the huge tile shower.
We picked Bedrosian Zenia tiles 2X9 tile in Orion and Milky Way. We put the green on the bottom and the white on top. We made the change of tile color at the window top. (Hint Hint… when color blocking with paint line it up with an architectural detail)
It actually helped the angled ceiling in the shower make sense. I think the green would have been overpowering.
These are handmade tiles and I love the variation. Many of the things in these old homes were handmade so this was the perfect touch. It looks unique and unexpected, yet clean and timeless.
I personally like that it takes a smaller bathroom and draws your eye back to make it look bigger.

This looks good so far! We’ll be doing a similar bathroom layout (with a slanted ceiling in the shower) – so I’ll have to come back to see how it turns out 🙂

Thanks! Yes, the slanted ceiling makes things challenging. My only advice would be to have good tile edging in mind. It really helps.
