Spring 2022 One Room Challenge: The 10 Year Anniversary!
The Spring 2022 One Room Challenge has come and gone. Wow… 8 weeks went fast. Its time to see how this really dated old house kitchen was transformed. The kitchen was attached to a breakfast nook and felt really small and closed off to the rest of the house. It was time to open it up and make it feel bigger. Lets first take a look at the before…
This is what the kitchen and breakfast nook looked from the Dining Room. A table wouldn’t even fit in this space. Two people max. That was not going to work. Soo….
We opened it up and just made this small kitchen feel big and spacious
The only thing left of the breakfast nook was the 100 year old built in hutch. Man… she was hidden but now she is a star of the space.
The Fridge is integrated into the pantry wall to just save a ton of space. Here is where the fridge used to be.
The fridge felt tight in this corner and it also cut all important storage and counter space.
The window was a little bit of a tricky quirk but we knew we wanted to extend the counters so we moved the fridge and replaced it with this beautiful stove.
By finding a new place for the fridge we not only made the kitchen bigger we made the corner something really useful.
The sink cabinet was a mess. Can you see how much it was slanting?
Much better right? That window is a perfect place to look out in the back yard and we knew that we wanted to center it. However, centering the sink on the window meant there was not room for the dishwasher so we moved it to the left around the corner.
This is where the stove used to be but we knew we wanted a big island/peninsula
We replaced the stove with the dishwasher. It’s actually the cabinet in the middle. We wanted everything to look cohesive and not broken up by the appliances so we chose a panel ready dishwasher. The cabinets are on legs with a toe kick covering the legs. What is great about that is the dishwasher water lines and drain can run underneath the cabinet.
You can see that we continued the cabinet underneath one of the windows. This allowed for a perfect U-shaped Kitchen
The pendant Light is actually an Idea I had in my head for a long time. I modified this pendant light from Etsy. The Etsy seller changed out the fitter for me so I could use these vintage shades. He also lengthened the wire so I could swag the light into two pendants.
The bar stools are from Kirklands. I really never go in but they came up on my google search “bentwood barstool” and they were in store where I live! They look like something from Serena and Lilly!
Lets talk cabinets. We used Ikea Sektion cabinets and interior fittings and then ordered Doors and Drawers from Semihandmade. The style we chose was the Sarah Sherman Samuel Beaded doors and drawers in Agave.
The shelves replaced all of our upper cabinets. You can see how we made them here.
I knew that the angle of the ceiling was going to make it tricky for sconce lighting.
I have loved the Octavia wall sconces from Sazerac Stitches for a long time and this was the perfect kitchen for them to be used. The sink light is a different version of the octavia sconce.
Matching all the brass finishes was important. This faucet from Kraus is such a good option if you have selected polished brass.
The Hood is from Hoodsly and I am a huge fan. It was easy to install and so pretty. We needed a hood to curve into the top to miss the structural soffit.
The stove is from Ilve USA. We chose the blue gray color and it looks fantastic with the cabinets.
The knobs and pulls are from Rejuvination fit the unlaquered brass knobs on the stove perfectly.
The tile floor in from Emser Tile. We used the 1 ” hex in fawn and pure white. Honestly the shadows and sunlight made taking pictures of the tile hard. Its beautiful and always looks clean.
The sunlight was hard to get the pantry and the fridge. I will post more of this soon. I love how it fades away and feels like its apart of the wall. The right side of the cabinet is the pantry. The left side is a ton or storage that makes up for the lack of wall cabinets.
The original built in just looks stunning and houses all of my clients china and serving ware.
The counters are from Wichita Granite and Cabinetry. I always purchase a slab from their yard so I never know their name. This is a quartz slab and it is the one I think that looks closest to real marble.
The marble tile is from Floor and Decor. Because we have a gas stove we chose a polished marble instead of a honed. It will hold up longer behind that stove and patina perfectly.
We decided to take around the entire room to make it all feel like one big space. It also helped to tie in all the corners. We discussed and discussed where the tile should end and then it just made sense to keep it going and stop it where the room ended.
Here is what used to be the view from the front door.
Here it is today.
Now you can sit at the island and watch everyone swim in the pool!
Or sit at the table and see the person in the kitchen!
This was a really fun space to do. Thanks for following along.
