Spring 2022 One Room Challenge: The 10 Year Anniversary!
Its week 3 and we are diving into all things floor of this kitchen. This is a 90 year old house that originally had a wood floor. Sometime in the 70s there was a fire in the kitchen and the original wood was removed and replaced with a vinyl sheet floor. We decided we wanted to go old school and add a tile floor. Since it was an old house why not do a historical tile pattern?
Lets just remind ourself where we started….
Any thing would be better than this floor. Yikes.
We knew that we wanted to do the pattern in a 1″ hex tile. I found a 1″ matte beige hex from Emser tile. The color is fawn. We loved it and knew it would be the dominant color of the floor. Once we had the product we just had to figure out the pattern.
I typically start with an inspiration pattern and then print a blank hexagon sheet to figure out the pattern. You can tell how much I had to erase to get it right.
I needed to do the pattern to understand how much to order but first up was the heated floor:
Since we have intentionally kept the old windows and the plaster walls there is not much insulation in the house. The Kitchen on the other hand is now insulated and has a heated floor. The house is small and this will really help in the winter keep the house warm.
Slowly the floor became the beige color.
Sometimes you lay the floor and the pattern at the same time. We decided to remove the tile for the pattern afterwards so that we could figure how to do it around the cabinets. I am highly involved in this stage. My tile setters do the pattern but I go before them and place the tiles where they should go.
You can see I have the area where the cabinets will be taped off. We only placed a pattern under the cabinets if were where the toe kick would show the pattern.
We loves how it turned out…. however….
We chose the wrong grout color on the first grout. Thankfully I caught it and the floor needed a second layer of grout so we decided to go a little bit darker.
Much better for hiding dirt and keeping the floor looking clean. Stay tuned for the finished product
We are really excited about how this small kitchen will turn out. Stay tuned next week for all things Ikea and Semihandmade
